Team Update
We conducted a 24 hour training session this past weekend. Steve, set up a course for us and we started at Cochiti Lake and paddled about 8 miles. We transitioned to the bikes and rode about 20 miles on fire roads to NM Hwy. 4 just east of the Valle Caldera National Preserve. This leg included 6380 feet of elevation gain. Then we transitioned to a trek to Ponderosa, NM through some beautiful alpine forests. This leg was about 18 miles and had 3224 feet of elevation gain. We had an unexpected mystery event…our support crew member’s car battery was dead (BTW, thanks Andrea). Jeff and Keith found some nearby campers who gladly gave us a jump. Then we were onto the bikes for the final 27 mile leg and 1927 feet of elevation gain. We finished the whole thing before day light on Sunday just after 6:30. Our time was 22:07:38 and this included all transitions.
Our average moving speed was about 3.3mph and we covered 11,531 feet of elevation gain in 73 miles. This should be fairly typical of what a PQ day might look like. We felt good and like we could catch a few z’s and go on for another day! Hats off to the team for great attitudes, lots of humor and some great memories. Oh yeah, and just a little suffering,
